Blackmans Bay Cafe: "The Beach"
The key consideration was the public function of the project, suggesting an opportunity to release the building from the dismal suburban context as a truly public object in spatial and visual terms. "The Beach", a refurbishment of a beachside corner shop into a cafe and restaurant, has therefore been considered as an "iceberg" that has floated into this problematic context. The nature of the corner site and the eccentricity of the building's location along the beachfront reinforce the "iceberg" idea.
