We have released our Sustainability Action Plan (SAP).

As we have published in the past, we agree with the position of the Danish Consumer Protection Agency that “sustainable architecture” is a paradox that amounts to false advertising.  Despite this, as the accepted industry nomenclature is “Sustainability Action Plan” we have used the same title for ease of communication.

Our position is laid out in the introduction where we describe how the structure, language and operation of our plan is in direct opposition to the less consequential positions outlined by Architects Declare and others which, in our view, do not go far enough and do not hold members of those groups properly accountable.  Our plan is a genuine attempt at both internal and external accountability for what we do.

In the interests of industry improvement we believe these documents should be made public.  You can therefore download the TERROIR SAP via the link below.

We are excited to announce today a major restructure of the practice to enhance our capacity and capability in what we do today, while also putting in place the groundwork for our future evolution in the coming decade. In this evolution, we aim to strengthen our position as a thought leader in the field while increasing our capacity to deliver projects that connect people and place. While this is TERROIR’s longstanding approach, it is now increasing in urgency and importance given the multiple dilemmas posed by a changing climate.

Central to the restructure is the announcement of four Principals across four focus areas: Cassandra Kiss (Business Development), David McPeak (Projects), Mikkel Møller Roesdahl (Research and Innovation) and Emily Slevin (Practice). Dave, Cassandra, Mikkel and Emily are an exceptional team who will work alongside the Founding Directors in further developing the practice and its expertise.

The Principal group will be supported by Kimberley Angangan (Sydney) and Mitchell Gardoll (Hobart) who take on a newly introduced Studio Lead role in their respective offices. Our brilliant team of Associates – Isabella Buddee, Joshua Lynch and Paul Sayers – round out a formidable leadership group that collectively has more than 75 years collective experience at TERROIR.

Our new headquarters for StLukes has very, very low embodied carbon.  Nevertheless, as it approached completion, we wondered, how low can we go?

The result was a research project with Philip Oldfield and William Craft of the University of New South Wales, which resulted in a number of outputs: a report, a refereed journal article in “Sustainable Cities and Society” and a more public-facing opinion piece in The Conversation, https://theconversation.com/how-low-can-we-go-to-cut-the-carbon-that-goes-into-buildings-to-net-zero-we-need-radical-change-236326.

August 19 was Equal Pay Day in Australia, a depressing reminder that women have to work an extra 50 days to equate to what men earn in the previous financial year.

To mark the occasion, the Australian Institute of Architects featured TERROIR who, at the time of writing, are the only medium-sized or large practice in Australia with a positive gender pay gap.  Not only that, our pay gaps are resoundingly positive, with a 17% average pay gap and 30% median pay gap.

We can be proud of our achievement, but it was a bittersweet realisation that the profession as a whole still has a long way to go.
