Increasing the size of a park without increasing its boundary
The Callan Park Landscape Structure Plan project short-circuits years of redundant masterplanning in a complex political landscape by setting out a clear, broad based strategy that appeals to the interests of the multiple stakeholder groups. The strategy comes with a program that is easy to understand and execute, allowing separate works to occur as needed while ensuring they contribute to the overall vision.
Callan Park is located on the banks of Iron Cove Bay and is part of a larger sequence of open spaces that combined represent the largest open space in the Inner West. Its scale, location and composition make it an important open space in the context of the Sydney. In the context of the Sydney Green Grid project, Callan Park is positioned in a key intersection of Green Grid projects within the Central District.
The initial phases of this project, in collaboration with TYRRELLSTUDIO, involved working with the Office of Environment and Heritage and GANSW to review all relevant documents in detail. This phase was highly intensive and consultative with tight timeframes to rapidly develop strategies and dilemmas to provide the basis for ongoing investigation. The initial piece of work evolved into a Landscape Structure Plan that sets out an overall strategy and series of discrete projects, considering the unique nature of the place and its rich history, that can be undertaken to bring this strategy to life. The Structure Plan provided a conceptual arrangement of how the park might be understood in the future, including the project-by-project breakdown and implementation plan.
